Adverse Effects No adverse effects have been reported. Contraindications To be avoided in bowel obstruction. Special Precautions In pregnant women, Herbolax can be used after the first trimester, weighing the risk-benefit ratio. Presentation Capsule: Box of 10 blister-pack strips of 10 capsules each. Tablet: Sealed pack of 100 tablets. Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Laxative action: Anthranoids from Cassia occidentalis and Cassia fistula have a stimulant and laxative effect in chronic constipation. Aloe vera, Ficus carica, Vitis vinifera, and Foeniculum vulgare have laxative activity. They also have a softening effect on stools, which eases constipation. Ipomoea turpethum is a mild laxative and treats constipation of varied etiology. Terminalia chebula is well known for its laxative action, and helps in smooth and normal evacuation. It does not interfere with normal intestinal movement. Solanum nigrum is credited with laxative property. Triphala and Rosa damascena are mild laxatives. 2. Prokinetic action: Herbolax softens stools and enhances intestinal motility, which results in smooth evacuation of the bowel without any colicky pain. Terminalia chebula, Cassia occidentalis, and Zingiber officinale have strong prokinetic activity. They act as motility stimulants that stimulate smooth muscle contraction and cause increased intestinal peristalsis. Embelia ribes has well-known anthelmintic action and stimulates intestinal peristalsis. 3. Prebiotic action: Prebiotics are non-digestible oligosaccharide food ingredients, which beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of bacteria in the colon. Prebiotics are helpful in relieving chronic constipation. Cichorium intybus has potent prebiotic activity that relieves chronic constipation. Herbolax® (capsule, tablet)
