Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Androgen receptor inhibitory action: Symplocos racemosa is reported to reduce the high androgen level in PCOS and prevent ovarian cell dysfunction, leading to an improvement in fertility. It also helps normalize progesterone and cholesterol levels, restore the histology of the ovarian tissue, and improve ovarian and uterine weight. Nardostachys jatamansi possesses antiandrogenic activity and helps reduce the signs and symptoms associated with hyperandrogenism such as hirsutism and hyperpigmentation. Sphaeranthus indicus is reported to have androgen receptor inhibitory action, and thus, helps reduce the elevated testosterone level. 2. Menstrual modulator action: Trigonella foenum-graecum helps normalize the significantly high levels of luteinizing hormone and folliclestimulating hormone observed in PCOS, and thus, regularizes the menstrual cycle. 3. Phytoestrogenic action: Aloe barbadensis helps normalize estrous cyclicity, maintains steroid status, and improves the fertility status. In hyperinsulinemia-induced animal model, treatment with Aloe barbadensis led to the reversing of estrus cyclicity to normal by controlling the hyperglycemic conditions and modulating steroidogenesis, thus indicating its potential use in the treatment of PCOS. 4. Anxiolytic action Nardostachys jatamansi helps reduce mood swings and anxiety associated with PCOS, as it is reported to possess anxiolytic activity. Sphaeranthus indicus possesses anxiolytic activity and helps in the management of anxiety and stress associated with PCOS. 5.
