Tablet: Children: ½ to 1 tablet twice daily. Adults: 1 to 2 tablets twice daily. Adverse Effects No adverse effects have been reported. Contraindications No known contraindications. Special Precautions When symptoms in acute diarrhea and amebiasis are not controlled after 3 days, it is advisable to carry out investigations to find specific causative factors, and other suitable medications may be added. Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Antidiarrheal action: Holarrhena antidysenterica, Aegle marmelos, and Punica granatum have antisecretory action, which help in controlling the hypersecretory phase of acute and chronic infectious diarrhea. Holarrhena antidysenterica also has astringent action, and is used in the treatment of amebic dysentery and diarrhea. The astringent action helps denature and prevent the action of proteins of diarrheal pathogens including viruses and toxins. The astringent property confers bacteriostatic and bactericidal actions. Shankha bhasma in Diarex tablet is a digestive, and also helpful in controlling diarrhea. 2. Antimicrobial and amebicidal actions: Punica granatum has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and is active against the strains of Escherichia coli. Holarrhena antidysenterica and Tinospora cordifolia have anti-Escherichia coli activity. Tinospora cordifolia also has amebicidal activity. Holarrhena antidysenterica inhibits the growth of Salmonella and Shigella. Diarex® (syrup, tablet)
