Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Antispasmodic and analgesic actions: Bonnispaz’s antispasmodic and analgesic actions relieve symptoms of colic in GI disorders in infants and children. Carum copticum has antispasmodic activity due to its anticholinergic action. The extract of Carum copticum has analgesic activity. The volatile oil from Zingiber officinale contains fractions like α-phellandrene, β-pinene, and terpinolene that interact with the 5-HT3 receptor channel system and exert an antispasmodic effect. A trial also shows that the volatile oil from Zingiber officinale has a spasmolytic effect mediated via Ca2+-antagonistic activity, reflected in terms of inhibition of spontaneous contractions, K+ (80 mM)-induced contractions, and displacement of Ca2+ dose-response curves. 2. Carminative action: The volatile oil from Zingiber officinale has carminative and stimulant actions that support the normal GI functions in infants and growing children. The essential oils of Carum carvi have carminative action that provides relief from commonly encountered GI problems in infants and growing children. 3. Antiflatulent action: Zingiber officinale and Carum copticum have antiflatulent action that helps in flatulent colic. The volatile oil from Carum carvi, containing carvone and limoline, is helpful in providing relief from spastic conditions of the abdomen including bloating and abdominal fullness, which usually happens due to excessive flatulence. 4. Mucoprotective action: The antiulcerogenic and mucoprotective actions of Carum carvi are associated with a reduced acid output and increased mucin secretion, and an increase in prostaglandin E2 release and decrease in leukotrienes. The cytoprotective effect may be due to its flavonoid content and free radical scavenging property. 5. Anti-nauseating action: Zingiber officinale has potent anti-nauseating action. 6.
