Anti-allergic action: In in vitro models of immunoglobulin (Ig) E–sensitized allergic reactions in mast cells and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) models, Cassia tora seed extract suppressed degranulation, histamine production, and reactive oxygen species generation. It also inhibited TNF-α and IL-4. Furthermore, Cassia tora extract suppressed IgE-mediated signaling, thus suggesting the beneficial effects of the herb in allergy-related conditions. In allergy-induced experimental models, Ocimum sanctum exhibited the potential to stabilize mast cells and prevent the release of histamine and other key inflammatory mediators. Boswellia serrata gum resin extract showed promising anti-allergic activity, when tested in vitro, and it significantly inhibited the compound 48/80–induced degranulation of mast cells. Selected compounds present in Mallotus philippinensis extract showed promising anti-allergic activity in experimental, mast cell–mediated allergy models. 3. Antimicrobial action: Cassia tora seed extract exhibits promising antibacterial activity, especially against the most common skincolonizing bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Ocimum sanctum extract is known to have potent antibacterial and antifungal activities. Mallotus philippinensis extract is known to have promising antimicrobial activity. 4. Wound-healing action: Extracts of Ocimum sanctum improved antioxidant activity in granulation tissue and promoted wound healing. Studies indicate that topical application of Boswellia serrata formulation accelerates wound healing. 5. Emollient and skin protectant actions: Medium- and long-chain fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, linoleic, oleic, and lauric acids) in Sesamum indicum seed oil help exert an emollient effect by filling up the spaces between skin flakes. These fatty acids support restoration of the skin barrier function, thus, ensuring hydration and integrity of the skin cells. 6. Keratolytic action: Gandhaka/sulfur is known for its keratolytic property, by which it helps remove dead skin cells and promotes healing of scaly, inflamed skin. Gandhaka is used extensively in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for treating pruritus, herpes, scabies, and other skin diseases. Vegecort® (cream)
