Pharmacological Actions of Rauwolfia serpentina Rauwolfia serpentina has been proven to be useful in mild to moderate hypertension. It acts on postganglionic sympathetic nerve endings and depletes the peripheral catecholamines and serotonin, without affecting the central stores of amines. Its antihypertensive activity is due to decrease in peripheral resistance and the resultant decrease in cardiac output. Rauwolfia serpentina blocks the uptake of biogenic amines by norepinephrine storage vesicles, which leads to a decrease in norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in central and peripheral neurons.
