Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Analgesic action: Rumalaya liniment depresses the cutaneous sensory pain receptors and acts directly to diminish or obliterate pain. Mentha arvensis provides potent analgesic action, and thus, is used externally in rheumatism, neuralgia, and headaches. Gaultheria fragrantissima contains 98% methyl salicylate, a known analgesic. It is applied externally in rheumatism, sciatica, and neuralgia due to its analgesic property. Cinnamomum camphora is topically used as a rubefacient and mild analgesic, and is externally used in rheumatism. Piper nigrum, Sesamum indicum, and Carum copticum are well-known for their analgesic activity. Bavachinin-A isolated from Psoralea corylifolia has mild analgesic and antipyretic activities similar to oxyphenylbutazone and hydrocortisone. 2. Anti-inflammatory action: Psoralea corylifolia, Mentha arvensis, Pinus longifolia, and Carum copticum have potent anti-inflammatory action that penetrates superficial inflamed tissues, increases blood flow to the affected area, and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory chemomediators. As a result, it reduces swelling associated with inflammatory conditions, shortens recovery time, and increases joint mobility. Piperine, the major constituent of Piper nigrum, shows analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities, thus emphasizing its use in various musculoskeletal disorders. Rumalaya® (liniment)
