T h e r a p e u t i c I n d e x 222 Boswellic acids from Boswellia serrata inhibit leukotriene synthesis by interacting directly with 5-lipoxygenase, and hence, are powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Metabolites like eugenol, pyrogallol, and cinnamaldehyde from Cinnamomum zeylanicum were found to inhibit COX-2 and provide anti-inflammatory effect. 4. Antioxidant action: The antioxidant action adds synergy to the anti-inflammatory action of Rumalaya gel. Mentha arvensis, Pinus roxburghii, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Vitex negundo, and Zingiber officinale are potent antioxidants. 5. Glycosaminoglycan-building action: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) form an important component of the connective tissue, and provide structural support to the body. Boswellic acids from Boswellia serrata enhance the metabolism of GAGs. Boswellia serrata also helps to prevent the degradation of GAGs, thus preserving them. 6. Hydroxyproline-enhancing action: Hydroxyproline, a major component of collagen, plays a great role in collagen stability. Cinnamomum zeylanicum increases hydroxyproline content in tissues, which is reduced in degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, and thus promotes cartilage repair and healing. Rumalaya® (gel)
