Remineralization of bones: Commiphora wightii helps in remineralization of bones and supports all the connective tissues. 2. Phytoestrogenic action: Phytoestrogens inhibit bone resorption, and also negate the bone resorptive effects of parathyroid hormone and prostaglandins. Withania somnifera improves bone calcification in calcium-deficient ovariectomized rats. Terminalia arjuna improves hormonal synthesis and secretion. 3. Calcium supplementation: Kukkutandatvak bhasma is rich in elemental calcium (CaCO3), which helps in better bioavailability of calcium. Godanti bhasma provides natural, easily absorbable calcium, and helps to maintain healthy bone structure. Terminalia arjuna contains bioactive compounds, which have vitamin D-like action that ensures higher calcium bioavailability. 4. Anti-inflammatory action: Reosto provides anti-inflammatory action in osteoporosis. Inappropriate inflammation is a component of a wide range of human diseases including autoimmune disease, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Pluchea lanceolata, Commiphora wightii, Withania somnifera, Sida cordifolia, and Kukkutandatvak bhasma possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, which help relieve bone pain. 5. Antioxidant action: Nitric oxide (NO), in addition to its known atheroprotective effect, plays an important role in osteoblast function and bone turnover. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a major role in bone metabolism, and superoxide production contributes to osteoclastic bone resorption. NF-kappa B, which mediates the action of TNF-a on osteoclasts, is activated by mitogens and cytokines through the generation of ROS. NADPH oxidase enzyme system stimulates superoxide production in osteoclasts, and there is decreased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity in postmenopausal osteoporotic women.
