Pharmacological Actions of Principal Ingredients 1. Anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective actions: Glycyrrhiza glabra is reported to reduce gastric secretions, produce thick protective mucus that covers the lining of stomach, and thus, protect the stomach from inflammation. 2. Antisecretory and antiulcer actions: Emblica officinalis is known to possess antisecretory and antiulcer activities. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial demonstrated that Emblica officinalis reduces the frequency of heartburn and regurgitation in patients with nonerosive reflux disease. 3. Antioxidant action: The polyphenols in Vitis vinifera are reported to protect the digestive system from oxidative injury by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and by regulating the membrane microviscosity in gastric and duodenal membranes. The antioxidant activity and strong ability of procyanidins in Vitis vinifera to bind with the protein covering the gastric lining may be responsible for this protective effect.
