Antimicrobial action: Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are the best for hand sanitization mainly because of their wide spectrum of activity against microbes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol to help prevent illness and spreading germs to others. Also, the WHO (in 2015) recommended 80% concentration of ethanol for “disinfectant: alcohol-based hand sanitizer”. The WHO has outlined that alcohol-based disinfectants show results against emerging viruses too (eg, Zika, Ebola, and MERS CoV). Further, in vitro studies have established that alcohol-based disinfectants can be effective in reducing the viral load. Research suggests that alcohols are swiftly germicidal when applied to the skin but have no noticeable persistent residual activity. Also, alcohol exhibits potent bactericidal action. 2. Skin-conditioning action: Coriandrum sativum oil has a beneficial effect in skin dryness because of its emollient and moisturizing actions. Further, Vetiveria zizanioides, Cyperus scariosus, Azadirachta indica, and Hedychium spicatum are well-known for their skin conditioning and protectant properties, and thus, help prevent skin dryness and leave the skin soft and smooth.
