Antiviral action: A study showed that oral administration of the extracts Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus for 24 weeks resulted in significant lowering of the viral load. The extracts of Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus show suppression of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), and thereby suppress HBV replication. Also, in vitro studies have demonstrated that these extracts suppress HBV replication by reverse transcriptase inhibition. 2. Immunomodulatory action: The extracts of Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus show immunomodulatory effect by causing the release of nitric oxide (NO) by macrophages and cytokines like TNF-α. 3. Anti-inflammatory action: In vivo studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory potential of the extract of Cyperus rotundus in acute models of inflammation such as carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and acetic acid-induced peritonitis in mice. 4. Hepatoprotective action: Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus extracts exert a hepatoprotective effect by reversing the oxidative damage to hepatocytes. Various trials have shown that Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus significantly reversed CCl4-induced changes in serum ALT and AST levels, and restored the hepatic glycogen levels. This may be due to the membrane-stabilizing potential that helps in preventing the leakage of intracellular enzymes into the systemic circulation. According to a study, oral administration of the extracts Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus for 24 weeks was markedly effective in a majority of the patients as it resulted in disappearance or alleviation of chief clinical symptoms such as abdominal pain and poor appetite.
