Demulcent and antiseptic actions: Honey is a popular topical demulcent for cough, and is recommended by WHO for the treatment of cough in children. The antiseptic action of Honey helps prevent microbial growth as Honey is acidic in nature, with a high sugar but low water content. The antiseptic action of Honey is maintained even upon dilution. Honey contains the enzyme glucose oxidase, which is activated upon dilution with water. Glucose oxidase converts glucose to gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The liberated hydrogen peroxide helps kill microbes. 2. Antitussive action: Elettaria cardamomum supports through its antitussive property and is used in various polyherbal formulations. Honey is well-known for its use in various cough mixtures due to antitussive effect. 3. Anti-inflammatory action: Koflet-H lozenge’s anti-inflammatory action reduces inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, especially in the pharynx and larynx. Alpinia galanga, Syzygium aromaticum, and Elettaria cardamomum have strong anti-inflammatory action, which controls the inflammation associated with acute and chronic cough. 4. Antimicrobial action: Acacia catechu has antimicrobial activity against pathogenic oral bacteria. Terminalia chebula, Syzygium aromaticum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and Honey have antimicrobial activity that may be helpful in alleviating throat irritation. 5. Local analgesic action: β-caryophyllene, one of the main components of the oil obtained from the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, exhibits local anesthetic action and provides relief from throat pain. Elettaria cardamomum and Cinnamomum zeylanicum have antinociceptive action, which provides relief from pain in sore throat. 6. Antihistaminic action: Syzygium aromaticum inhibits immediate hypersensitivity by inhibition of histamine release from mast cells in vitro and in vivo, which in turn is helpful in relieving local throat irritation. 7. Other beneficial activities: Elettaria cardamomum prevents foul breath due to its aromatic nature.
