Gum-strengthening action: Polyphenols in Piper betle, tannins in Terminalia bellirica and Salvadora persica exhibit potent astringent action that helps in toning the gums. 2. Mouth-freshening action: Gaultheria fragrantissima, Elettaria cardamomum, Mentha piperita, and Trachyspermum ammi impart a fragrant, mouth-freshening effect that helps in the management of halitosis. 3. Antimicrobial and plaque-inhibitory actions: Salvadora persica has potent antimicrobial action against oral cariogenic pathogens, and thus, is helpful in preventing dental caries, and gingival and periodontal inflammation. Piper betle has a bacteriostatic effect on common oral bacteria like Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus mitis, and Actinomyces species. Piper betle shows plaque-inhibitory activity by inhibiting adherence of early dental plaque settlers, making the environment not conducive to Streptococcus mutans, a cariogenic bacteria. The essential oils of Gaultheria fragrantissima possess antimicrobial activity. Elettaria cardamomum possesses inhibitory activity against the oral microbial population in vitro. Mentha piperita possesses antimicrobial activity against common pathogens like Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Terminalia bellirica has encouraging broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. 4. Analgesic action: Menthol, a compound from Mentha piperita, has a topical analgesic effect with the ability to relieve pain originating from the oral cavity and gives a pleasant cooling sensation.
