IMMUNITY in CHILDREN

11 “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patient in care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” —Thomas Edison — ‘My child keeps falling ill often! I think he has low immunity. Which foods should I include in his diet? What should he avoid eating? Will immune boosters help?’ These are a few common questions to which parents seek answers. I am a pediatric immunologist and deal with children who have very low immunity. Parents need to know what is normal and what needs immediate medical attention about the immunity of their children. Children with low immunity fall sick repeatedly, and their parents consult several doctors before getting an appropriate diagnosis. On the other hand, healthy children may fall ill sometimes and do not often need any medical tests. When children develop repeated fevers, parents wish to know if their kids need any special tests. This book shall not only answer this crucial question but also guide young parents on the right practices for helping their children build a healthy immune system. An attempt has also been made to eliminate myths surrounding immunity, immune boosters, and the like. I sincerely hope parents enjoy reading this book and feel more confident and comfortable handling their children’s immunity-related issues. — Dr Sagar Bhattad MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), DM (Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) Consultant, Pediatric Immunologist and Rheumatologist Preface
