My Baby and Me

60 What are disposable diapers made of? Diapers are made using absorbent materials covered in layers of other materials. The absorbent material is usually a polymer and is present in the core of the diaper and does not come in contact with the baby's skin. Some diapers contain certain dyes, which act as wetness indicators. Most of these are safe for infant skin. Some diapers contain volatile organic compounds, like toluene and xylene, used as fragrances in the diaper and may cause some skin irritation. Wood pulp is bleached and used to make diapers, producing dioxins as by-products. These compounds may persist for long in the diaper, but are not at harmful levels in the disposable diapers available in the market.
