My Baby and Me

33 The diaper must get heavier with urine with each passing day, particularly after the third day. Once the baby is a week old, there should be 6 to 8 wet diapers in an entire day. A wet diaper should feel like two to four tablespoons of water on a dry diaper. Watch out for the following signs in your baby: » Your baby does not pass urine within 48 hours after birth. » Your baby is wetting less than the number of diapers as his/her age in days. » The urine is dark, or the color seems abnormal. If you notice any of these changes, please contact your pediatrician without further delay. What is the normal frequency of urination? In the initial days, the frequency of urination may be less, as the feeding pattern begins to settle into a definite routine. If your baby passes urine at least 2-3 times a day during the initial days after birth, it may be considered normal. Once the feeding pattern becomes well-defined, the baby will pass urine at least 5-6 times daily. If it is less frequent than this, it could point to inadequate milk consumption. During winter, the baby may pass urine more often, sometimes soon after every feed; this is normal and is not a cause of worry.
