100 How is colic identified? Colic is defined as excessive crying in infants. The crying episodes generally continue for around three hours per day. Every episode usually has a clear starting and end point, and the onset is not related to events that happened before the episode started. There is a sudden onset of the crying episode, which is more common in the evening. The baby is usually happy in between the bouts of crying. The baby does not appear to be otherwise sick. The episodes are common, usually between the first and third months of life, after which the colic subsides. Occasionally, colic may persist for longer periods.
